RESOLVED:

That the Minutes of the meeting held on 27 March 2014 be confirmed as a correct record and the Mayor be authorised to sign them.

4.

Vote of Thanks and Presentation of Commemorative Badges to Outgoing Mayor and Consort

Minutes:

 

Councillor Watts moved a vote of thanks to the outgoing Mayor, Councillor Barry Edwards, and thanked the Mayor for all his hard work.  The Mayor attended over 350 official engagements and raised over £20,000 for charity during the year.

 

Councillor Edwards thanked Councillor Watts and spoke about his time at the Council.  Councillor Edwards thanked colleagues for their support and expressed his best wishes to the new Mayor. 

 

 

 

5.

To Elect the Mayor of the London Borough of Islington for the ensuing Municipal Year

Minutes:

 

Councillor Hull, seconded by Councillor Burgess, moved that Councillor Theresa Debono be elected as Mayor for the ensuing municipal year.

 

RESOLVED:

That Councillor Theresa Debono be elected as the Mayor of the London Borough of Islington for 2014/15.

The Mayor vacated the Chair and the Council adjourned while Councillor Debono was invested with the robes of office.  The Mayoral party then returned to the Chamber.

6.

Declaration of Acceptance of Office by the Mayor

Minutes:

 

The Mayor accepted the office by making and subscribing to the required declaration, attested by Councillors Hull and Burgess.

The Mayor thanked the Council for electing her.  Anthony Debono will be the Mayor’s Consort.

 

The Mayor announced that her two charities will be Home Start and the Islington Food Bank.

 

The Mayor announced that the Deputy Mayor would be Councillor Richard Greening and that Patsy Bradbury would be the Deputy Mayor’s Consort.

 

7.

Election of the Leader of the Council - to elect the Leader of the Council for a four year term of office

Minutes:

 

Councillor Alice Perry, seconded by Councillor Poole, nominated Councillor Richard Watts as the Leader of the Council.

RESOLVED:

That Councillor Watts be elected as Leader of the Council for a four year term.

RESOLVED:

a)    That the Leader of the Council has approved the changes to responsibility for some Executive functions be noted.

a)    That the amendments to the Constitution set out in the revised Appendix attached to the report be agreed.

b)    That the Assistant Chief Executive (Governance and HR) be authorised to make any consequential amendments to the Constitution she considers necessary be agreed.
