Stop tree slaughter at Highbury Corner

We the undersigned petition the council to reverse that part of its planning permission for application P2017/2936/FUL that involves the felling of seven trees to allow the building of a six-storey block for private ownership and profit, and to undertake to preserve these trees from harm or disturbance.

The foliage of these trees is considerable. It is equivalent to about a quarter of the much praised Highbury Arboretum, and located where it is most needed, alongside the public highway and close to a primary school already suffering from pollution.
Had this part of the application been made separately, Islington residents would have readily exerted their rights to try to prevent greenspace reduction. They would have dismissed it, as would the Council itself. By combining it financially with a commendable attempt to provide affordable housing, the Council effectively side-stepped these rights.
Since the planning decision was made, Islington Council has declared a Climate Emergency. This is the perfect time to show they mean it by reversing, without shame or recrimination, a decision that (if carried out) will reduce greenspace and make local pollution more dangerous.
