An e-Petition is a petition which collects signatures online. This allows petitions and supporting information to be made available to a potentially much wider audience than a traditional paper based petition.

Anyone who lives, works or studies in the area can submit or sign an e-Petition.

E-Petitions are part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to listening to and acting on the views of the public.

Supporting a Petition

Submitting a Petition

A Petition can relate to any issue on which the Council has powers or duties or on which it has shared delivery responsibilities through a partnership arrangement.


This Council accepts no liability for the petitions on these web pages. The views expressed in the petitions do not necessarily reflect those of Islington Council. The accuracy of information contained within petitions is not verified by Islington Council.

Petition a full Council Meeting

You can submit your petition to the next meeting of full Council. You can either attend the meeting in person and speak on the subject of the petition for up to 2 minutes if you wish, or you could ask one of your local ward councillors to present the petition for you.

Presenting a petition at full Council will ensure that all the Councillors present are aware of the petition. Both the title of the petition and your name will be included in the published minutes of the meeting. These are a public record of the meeting and will be available on the council's website. To present a petition to Council, please email the petition to The deadline for submitting a petition is 5pm the day before the Council meeting. This should be accompanied by a written statement explaining your petition, which you will be invited to read out at the meeting

After the meeting the petition will be referred to the relevant Corporate Director. The Corporate Director determines what action, if any, shall be taken and ensures that the lead petitioner receives a response within a reasonable time, along with the relevant Executive Member, or chair of a committee.

You can submit your petition directly to the service concerned, by email or post. The contact information for departments is listed below. A petition submitted directly to the department will receive a response from council officers.

Petition Thresholds

The council treats all petitions received seriously and will give full consideration to all the options available to meet any requests made regardless of the size of the petition. However, there are some special arrangements in place for very large petitions, as follows:

  1. If the petition has received between 1,000 and 2,000 signatures, the petition organiser can request a meeting with the Leader of the Council or the Executive Member with the relevant portfolio responsibilities.
  2. If the petition has received 2,000 signatures or more, a debate of up to 15 minutes, will be held on the subject of the petition, usually at the meeting of ordinary full Council following the one when it was presented.
